Molino Bajo is situated in the village of Melegis in the stunning Valley of Lecrin (Arabic for “happiness”). Surrounded by the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Sierra Nevada in the background and a lush valley of citrus groves, olive trees, and the glistening Lake Beznar in the foreground, the location is truly spectacular. The valley offers many iconic walks and there is also horse riding for those wishing to explore the unspoiled Andalusian countryside. Melegis is home to the best and most popular restaurant in the valley, Los Naranjos, just a short 2-minute walk from the villa. In late 2022, a Michelin star restaurant is due to open a short walk up the road. You can find many other bars and restaurants a short drive away.
Melegis is, despite the appearance of remoteness, only 25 minutes drive to the historic city of Granada, 25 minutes drive to the nearest beaches at Playa de Granada or Salobrena and 55 minutes drive to the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada. There are three golf courses within a 25-minute radius. Between the months of January and early May, it is possible to ski in the morning and swim in the Mediterranean or play golf in shorts in the afternoon, one of only a few places in the world where this is possible. Airports can be found at Malaga (1 hour and 15 minutes drive) and Granada (35 minutes drive).
Granada is arguably the most beautiful city in Spain and is home to the world-renowned Alhambra (recently short-listed for the Eighth Wonder of the World), now Spain’s most visited monument. The city was ruled by the Moorish Kings from 711 until 1492 and this has left a remarkable architectural, artistic and cultural legacy that permeates the whole city. The unique blend of Islamic and Catholic cultures has created a very special city indeed. For those who enjoy a glass of vino, Granada is the last city in Spain to offer free tapas with every beer or glass of wine that you order. The Sierra Nevada is Europe’s most southerly ski resort and also one of the highest, with pistes as high as 3300m. On a clear day one can see Africa and the Atlas Mountains from the top.
There is a great choice of beaches 25 to 40 minutes away. Playa de Granada and Salobrena are the closest and La Herradura, Almunecar and Marina del Este are very much worth the extra 10-15 minute drive. This area is where the local Spanish tend to holiday, so if you like the idea of a day at the beach without seeing fish and chips or Guinness on the menu then you have found the right place. We can recommend many beach restaurants, please contact us for details.
Alternatively, if you are seeking pure blissful relaxation for your entire stay and avoidance of contact with the outside world, simply chill out at Molino Bajo and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the valley and Melegis. With Los Naranjos on your doorstep, you don’t even have to consider the stress of cooking.
